11.18.08 | LAST GOODBYE now available on iTunes!
Hello all!

I'm excited to announce that a new song that I recorded with producer Robin Danar, "Last Goodbye", is available as of today on iTunes. It was fun for me to work with Mr. Danar on this song. I'll bet some of you may recognize it as a Jeff Buckley cover... but we did change it up a bit so I hope you dig.

click on this link - it may be the best $0.99 you've spent in a while!
Robin Danar - Last Goodbye (feat. Celia Chavez) - Single

Thanks as always for your support and kind messages.
Have a lovely Thanksgiving month!

xoxo,
Celia

11.03.08 | CELIA ON KCRW'S MORNING BECOMES ECLECTIC
Today on Los Angeles radio station KCRW’s Morning Becomes Eclectic, DJ Nic Harcourt spun a song so fresh it’s not even available yet: Last Goodbye, by Robin Danar featuring Celia Chavez on vocals. Celia also helped with the rearrangement of the song (originally performed by Jeff Buckley) and contributed a little rhythm guitar to add to Danar’s groovy, moody production.

Also contributing ambient lead guitar to the song is Chris Parks, half of NYC duo Albright.

You can hear the archived show at http://www.kcrw.com/archive until the next show airs, and our song opens the show so it’s not hard to find.

Look for this song’s digital release exclusively on iTunes very soon!
Yay!

09.06.08 | tickled P!NK
Hi all,

It's been a very eventful week. It started out with my best gal, Hilary Gardner, coming out Labor Day weekend to join me in the sun. It was amazing being able to spend that gal time, and then right on her heels, my other best gal from Seattle, Alicia Dara (both these ladies are in my top friends) came to LA so we could do a show together and celebrate her new CD release. Fun fun fun.

The icing on the cake for my week was prepping for - then auditioning for - P!NK. amazingly i made it through the process and wound up making it into her backup singing section! which is very exciting as you can imagine. i definitely did not get there alone - i had much help from several friends and my awesome voice coach Libby Lavella. now things are moving very fast with calls from P's management asking me for name/address/soc and also what is my shoe size while also telling me what time the band call is for wardrobe fittings and rehearsal tomorrow morning at Paramount Studios. pretty soon the giddiness will give way to the realization that now the work begins and i better take really good care of my voice and myself! cuz this is a really rockin' gig, yo!

but for now, i'm just excited to tell you that while the bad news is, i'm having to cancel the next few shows of my residency in Venice. the good news is, you can see me and the band on the MTV Video Music Awards (VMA's) this Sunday night, Sept. 7th - check your local listings though, i think it's at 9PM Eastern Time.

I'll post the rest of the tour dates as I get them. hopefully i will come through your town.
have a great weekend and - get this party started...right now!

gratefully and humbly yours,
Celia

09.02.08 | Wow it’s September – when did that happen?!
As I’m no longer in a northern clime, it’s a little hard to see Autumn comin’ without clues. Where did summer go? Suddenly I’m getting emails from my friends who teach, so I know the kiddies are going back to school. Seeing as Labor Day is behind us, and at least one of my guys is back from being on tour, I guess I can say in my best Bronx accent that it is now sweater weather.

Why not commemorate the changing of the seasons with a musical evening and some Chinese food? Or join me in Venice, where my residency continues every other Sunday.

Check out the gigs page for all the dates and places you can catch me this month.

Have a lovely autumn!
xoxo
Celia

07.31.08 | Shakin' and Movin'
Hello dear readers,

Thank you for your emails and messages checking up on us out here in LA after the quake the other day. It was worse further east, closer to the epicenter in Chino. But we definitely felt it out here by the beach, my dishes were rattlin'! Fortunately nothing broke. This quake was mercifully short – not like the last big quake I was in back in Seattle on Leap Day 2000 that seemed to last for minutes.

OK, on to the music updates:
I. Facebook presence
II. NYC and LA gigs
III. Fall residency in Venice
IV. Radio Crystal Blue

I. FACEBOOK PRESENCE
Recent news: if you have a Facebook page, please look up my music page or the group – both are called "Celia Chavez Music". If we're F-book friends already, don't worry, I will invite you to the fan group. Just another way for us to keep in touch!
Fan group page: groups.to/celiachavezmusic
Music page: artist.to/celiachavezmusicpage

II. NYC & LA gigs
August brings a sort of east-west musical exchange: First, I'll be coming back to NYC (yay!) in the middle of the month for some singing work and also to reunite with Daniel Mintseris and perhaps a few other friends for a gig at Googie's on the lower east side of Manhattan on Friday, August 15th.

Then, a few of my friends from NYC are coming to Cali for a week. So we're putting a couple of shows together, just like old times at the Rockwood! Look for me, Emily Zuzik, James Maddock, and Leslie Mendelson – and maybe some other friends thrown in – at Zoey's in Ventura, then at Genghis Cohen in West Hollywood.

III. Fall residency in Venice
I'm also excited to have a residency starting August 24th. Every other Sunday, you can find me at the Air Conditioned Supper Club in Venice, CA. Some of these dates may be duo, solo, band…as my guys are in & out of town for the summer/early fall touring season (look for Mark Goldenberg with Jackson Browne, and Jon Ossman with Marc Cohn) it'll be a lovely venue for mixing things up and trying out new and different material. Big thanks to Heather Donaldson with Live Lounge for inviting us to spend our Sunday nights as part of her showcase!

IV. Radio Crystal Blue
Podcast plays: Thanks to Dan Herman who continues to play my music on his lovely and eclectic online show, Radio Crystal Blue – he featured some of my music a few weeks back. Please show him some love by checking out the show at: http://cblue.lunarpages.com and clicking on the streaming link in the player for the 6/29/08 show.

OK – we'll get to September later…first, I shall enjoy the rest of my summer.

Hope to see you on the coast of your choice!

Love
Celia

05.28.08 | Big Blue Bloom Boom coming into June
Well it’s about time for a new newsletter, I thought this week, as NBC just showed a rerun of that Lili Haydn appearance on the Tonight Show that I wrote about last time….a lot of good things have been happening since that first aired, and the summer is shaping up as well. I’ve fallen in love with the jacaranda tree, whose indigo blooms are in season and as ubiquitous in Southern Cal as rhododendrons are back in Seattle and Mr. Softee trucks in NYC this time of year. The signs of spring turning to summer…

As far as current music news:

All About Jazz – free download only ‘til June 3rd!
http://www.allaboutjazz.com/php/showcase.php
Click on the above link not only to see “Sailor’s Daughter” featured in this jazz website’s New Release Showcase, but also to take advantage of the free mp3 download of my song, Dandelion that features stellar trumpet and flugelhorn work by the fabulous Kiku Collins.

Amazon.com
http://www.amazon.com/Sailors-Daughter/dp/B0019E7H3E/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=dmusic&qid=1211959203&sr=8-1
Finally got notice that “Sailor’s Daughter” is now available as an MP3 download album on Amazon for only $8.99. So if you’re an Amazon fan, knock yourself out. (I have to say that I’m a bigger fan of CDBaby…but hey, whatever’s easier for the fans!)

June/July shows, and layin’ low
I of course accept that from time to time the fellas will be out on the road with other artists. This is the case for the early part of June, so I am taking advantage of the gig mini-hiatus by continuing to work on some new songs and arrangements. Been definitely itching to get going on more recording, and looking forward to getting back into the process of documenting the new tunes as well as waiting to see what direction this next record will take. And I may find some low-key songwriter hangs to satisfy my live gig cravings…stay tuned!

That said, our next band shows will be in Los Angeles:
On the Westside: Sunday, June 22nd @ 8:45 PM at the Air Conditioned Lounge in Venice
In Hollywood: Tuesday July 1st @ 8PM at Molly Malone’s – shared bill with Joy Askew!

I’ll be sure to send a reminder in a few weeks.

That’s it for now…thanks for reading, and enjoy the blue bloom boom.

Blessings,
Celia

03.25.08 | Lili Haydn dates - Tonight Show, and the Roxy
Celia will be singing with violinist Lili Haydn on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno on Monday, March 31st, on NBC. The band will perform Ms. Haydn's song, Strawberry Street.

Celia will also be in the band the following night, Tuesday April 1st, at the Roxy in Los Angeles for Ms. Haydn's CD release party for Place Between Places to be released on Nettwork Records. The event will also be a benefit for Amnesty International hosted by Bill Maher.

03.01.08 | Julia Fordham dates, and March gigs
Thank you to all the amazing Julia Fordham fans who gave me a warm welcome in Santa Barbara, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. Not only was it a joy and privilege to be given the chance to blend voices with the incomparable Ms. Fordham, but I was also pleasantly surprised by all the kind post-show comments and interest in my own musical projects! After seeing how devoted Julia’s fans are, I am grateful to have earned your respect. So if you’re visiting this site for the first time, and checking out my music, please stop by the contact page and drop me a line to say hello!

And if you’re in LA in March, please do come to one of my band’s gigs – there are details on the gigs page – but basically: Genghis Cohen on March 5th and 27th, and the Cat Club on March 18th.

Enjoy the inklings of spring!

Celia

01.27.08 | Year of the Rat
Hello friends!

Though there’s still a few weeks ‘til the official Chinese New Year celebration in February, 2008 is slated to begin the Year of the Rat: the year that begins the 12-year sequence of the animal signs in Chinese Astrology and therefore a time of renewal, activity, and rewards for hard work and resourcefulness. Hoping that all rings true this year! In any case, 2008 is off to a great start as I continue to settle into life in Cali and take advantage of opportunities both created and found.

To wit:

I. UPCOMING GIGS

II. JULIA FORDHAM DATES

III. COLLABORATIONS, WRITINGS, AND RECORDINGS

I. UPCOMING GIGS:

The next few months will be fun as the band and I try both acoustic and electric shows (and some solo acoustic shows) and try different songlists. You never know what we’ll pull out of our sleeves, so don’t miss these appearances around LA:

Tuesday, Feb. 5th, 9:30 PM @ Genghis Cohen in Hollywood
Sunday, Feb 10th, 9:30 PM @ AC Lounge in Venice
Saturday Feb 16th, 8:00 PM @ Talking Stick Café in Santa Monica (solo gig)

Spring will bring visits from a couple of my NYC friends, Emily Zuzik and Kirsten Price. We’ll be sharing sets at Genghis Cohen! But that’s for the March news…tune ino the web site or myspace page for more shows and details and I’ll spill more beans about it next newsletter.

II. JULIA FORDHAM DATES:

For years I’ve been fascinated by the deep and moody timbre of Julia Fordham’s voice. I now get the pleasure of blending my voice with hers on a few shows. She’s launching an original jazz album, but I’ll be singing backup in the “Greatest Hits” part of the set. I’m psyched to sing harmony with her on tunes like “Happy Ever After” and “Porcelain”. Details are on myspace but she’s playing with a killer band at these venues in Cali:
Tuesday, Feb 26 @ Soho in Santa Barbara
Wednesday, Feb 27 @ the Roxy in LA
Thursday, Feb 28 @ Bimbo’s in San Francisco

III. COLLABORATIONS, WRITINGS, AND RECORDINGS:

I met Nick Mancini in NYC while we were both sidepeople in Heather Eatman’s band. I remember being fascinated by his vibraphone – standing next to it I could see the inner workings and watch the sound being produced by the little fans and pedals. Now I get to enjoy the inner workings of Mr. Mancini himself as we are embarking on a collaborative project whose result will be revealed during our April residency at the Pasadena Jazz Institute. It’ll be a collection of new arrangements of some covers and standards as well as some of the jazzier songs out of my original repertoire. More soon on that. See online calendars for the residency dates.

I’m also continuing a studio collaboration with producer Robin Danar, whose upcoming CD will be released on Shanachie Records March 19th. We’ve done two recordings so far - yet to be released - but you can get an idea of his style by streaming tracks from his album, “Altered States”, at www.robindanar.com. We’re working on songs in a similar vein, all a blend of very human vocal performance and techno-pop-rock-grooviness – kind of like my work with Jonathan Plum, if you remember that. Fun fun fun.

One of my other goals for 2008 is to keep up with my bloggage a little better. These blogs may be about my musical exploits, or they may be impressions on recent experiences, or simply abstract-ish rants (like the one I just wrote about the Sergio Leone film, “Once Upon A Time In America”). Whenever I actually do get around to posting one, I receive all kinds of great feedback from my friends out there in the world. So hopefully more blogs may mean that we can stay better connected, and you’ll of course be the first to know the inside scoop.

Wishing you the sweetest fruit to come of all your labors!

Love,
Celia

12.11.07 | Here's to a great year!
Hello fans and friends,

There is certainly much to be grateful for as I look back on 2007. I've been blessed with help from many of you, and the CD would not have been made without your support and encouragement. It's meant a TON to see enthusiastic people at my gigs, showing up again and again, and also to get emails from old friends just finding my music again online. Thank you, thank you, thank you. You sustain me!

Also, those of you who have welcomed me on the west coast have been a blessing as well. It's a strange thing to start all over, but it seems fitting to have my last gig of the year at the Hotel Cafe in LA. A salute to the sunshine, so to speak. I'm amazed at the members of my band who have applied themselves wholeheartedly to the songs and are bringing a whole new fabulous flavor to the new set. I'm crossing my fingers that we will make a bunch of new friends tomorrow night.

After tomorrow's show i'll be focused on re-creating my role as a Funk Angel in the annual holiday spectacular, HOLIDELIC, hosted by Everett Bradley at Joe's Pub in NYC. If you're in town on Dec. 20th, that will be the hottest funk par-tay! (see pix and music from last year's show at www.myspace.com/holidelic) I'm super-excited to be harmonizing with my fellow Funk Angel, Nicki Richards. If you wanna hear all about her check out http://www.myspace.com/nickirichards. But the show does give me an excuse to wish NYC a happy holiday season.

As for the new year, I'm predicting more west coast shows with the LA lineup of Mark Goldenberg on guitar, JD Lipscomb on bass, and Forrest Robinson on drums and percussion. Crossing my fingers for periodic returns to NYC. And new songs already bubbling to the surface, no doubt stimulated by the SoCal sunshine. Another record? perhaps...:)

wishing you many blessings through the holidays and beyond
and thanking you for your love and support

- Celia

06.23.07 | the CD RELEASE PARTY that was...June 19th, 2007.
If you missed it, you can re-live the experience of joining the capacity crowd at the Cutting Room in Manhattan where the band and I ran an hourlong set celebrating the release of Sailor's Daughter with these two easy steps:

1) go to the pics page of this site and see the images captured throughout the evening by Andrew T. Foster, along with some snapshots by my fellow revelers Everett Bradley, Daniel Mintseris, Hilary Gardner, and me.

2) order a CD! :) $15.00 includes shipping. email me for details and we'll do PayPal. otherwise I'm waiting for the availability date on CD Baby and also digital download sites.

as for the CD release itself...

Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU to everyone who came out to the Cutting Room on Tuesday night for the CD release show!!

I did have a goofy Sally Field moment when I first came onstage and looked out into the sea of faces, and saw those of you standing in the back. Y'all packed the room, you crazies. I LOVE you!! Since the place had maybe 3 or 4x the capacity of the largest club I'd played here in NYC, it took me by (happy) surprise! I blurted something about how this was the largest number of people who had come to see me sing my own music, and my gratitude for being able to share the songs with everyone, yadda yadda, then we launched into a killer set. I guess I shouldn't be surprised, we all worked very hard on this album and it was definitely a labor of love, and a joy to make.

The band rocked, and I rolled with it...they made it so easy. Thank you Daniel, Tim, Tony, Steve, and Shane, and Kiku Collins, who followed with a stellar set with her own band. Special thanks to Gabrielle for the beautiful CD design, which was my most difficult part of making the record!

And of course, the merch girl with the mostest, Miss Hilary Gardner, who joined me and Daniel for celebratory sushi and fried bananas afterwards.

AND YAI/National Institute for People with Disabilities, for whom we raised a bunch of money - not sure of the total yet, but they're pretty happy - and I gotta thank them for helping to get so many people out to hear Kiku and me.

In the meantime, I'll add some of the tunes to this site, or you can check out a few more at www.myspace.com/celiachavez

Next show is at the Rockwood July 19th, 7PM, I'll have oodles of CDs with me then.

If you'd like a CD sooner than that or can't make the show, drop me a line, we'll figure out something!

Thanks again, and again, and AGAIN for your support!!

Love!
Celia

p.s. if you are one of those liner note nerds, you can read up on the songs and the lyrics at www.celiachavez.com, and select "about the songs" from the menu. enjoy!!

05.20.07 | CD RELEASE PARTY ANNOUNCED
Hi Everyone!

Please check the gigs page - the final details for the making of "Sailor's Daughter" are winding down, and I'm THRILLED to announce the date/time/place for the CD's release:

Tuesday, June 19th, 2007, 7PM, at the Cutting Room.

It's a full band show, and the entire ticket price will benefit one of my favorite causes here in NYC and beyond - YAI/National Institute for People with Disabilities. The Ninja Princess, Kiku Collins, will lead her band in a set of her own original compositions for the 2nd half of the benefit concert at 8PM.
Check out YAI/NIPD's web site at www.yai.org.

This may be the last gig for a while for me in NYC and the band as promoting/shopping the record and its songs will take priority through the end of the 2007. Also, I'll be shuttling back & forth from the west coast to try and expand my networking...cross your fingers for me and the CD!! xoxo

Everyone who played on the record will be there except my pal Dan Sadownick, who is on tour with Matisyahu! but another amazing percussionist, Shane Shanahan, will sub for him... again, see the gigs page for details on the band. So SAVE THE DATE and DON'T MISS IT!!!!

Blessings to all of you as the summer approaches. I'll be sending some sunshine your way!

Love and gratitude,
Celia xoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxo

04.14.07 | Album update
I am quite pleased to announce that as of last night, Friday the 13th, the album is mixed. You'll find a few of the songs here as the background music for the site. Check my myspace page for a few more, and I'll post release dates and gig dates soon, so stay tuned!

This project truly was a labor of love and I cannot thank the musicians, engineers, and my friends and family enough for helping me through the process. The songs are represented well and I guess I have to rewrite my press kit because it's not just jazz, or acoustic, anymore...but it's a unique and exciting direction I hope you'll enjoy.

the first CD release party will be in Seattle mid-June. Then in NYC later in June...then...?? stay tuned.

Drop me a line and let me know what you think!

Many thanks,
Celia

03.17.07 | The Scrappy Sessions vol. 2: Spring Snow, and Noninterference.
In honor of the St. Patrick’s Eve storm that dumped on us last night, I have posted one raw track from the upcoming album for your enjoyment: “Snow”. It’s just a duo: me, after four days of coughing like Ferris Bueller on a sick day (so I sound good and heartbroken!); with Steve Elliot playing “The Contessa”, my nylon string acoustic guitar (yes I’m a dork I name my guitars). Second take I believe, all the way thru, and no comps/edits. Scary to post it here so nakedly, but partly am doing so to show how I’m trying to do the record as old school and organically as possible.

That said…some comments from an expert on how to produce a record:

“I’m not an authority figure, I’m a student really…I’m just there to help out.”
- Ry Cooder

The other night I caught a bit of an old interview with Ry Cooder on WFUV (Jah bless internet radio) that was taped in 1997 as he was promoting Buena Vista Social Club. Cooder reiterated many times during the interview how he searched for the musicians he thought would best represent the Cuban songbook. Then he gathered them in a studio together – most of them had never played together before – but as they shared a deep love for the music, unparalleled talent and ability, and were able to express from a unique perspective, he just set ‘em loose and stepped in with input only when absolutely necessary to maintain cohesion.

It’s funny but when the band and I were all in the studio a few weeks ago, I distinctly remember watching the boys clowning in the big room as I felt left out and jealous, trapped in an isolation booth with two mics and my guitar. I distinctly remember sitting in the dimly lit booth and remember watching Buena Vista, and wondering how they got that fabulous sound with everyone there in the room together, and wondering why I couldn’t just sing in the middle of the room on a big fat tube mic. Also, thought my headphone mix was on, but my mics were muted, I could hear but not be heard – completely excluded from joining in the fun in the other room! But maybe it was for the best…the quote above was heard during the part of the interview where Cooder is talking about just getting that group of amazing musicians together and letting them play the way they knew best – and staying out of the way! Perhaps it’s better in the end that they put this anxious singer/songwriter in isolation! J

I definitely believe that if you pick your team right, all you need to do is remove or minimize obstacles to their success, and…success! This seems to be proving true. I have had minimal input to what the musicians should play, yet they seem to know just exactly what needs to be done. Like Kiku (thank goodness, as i know nothing about horn arranging!), and Rob Clores (who recently toured with the Black Crowes), who just played some beautiful bluesy/gospel-y/shimmery Hammond B3 organ tracks this week on “Wishing Well” and “Call Me From the Road”. Or Danny Sadownick, who hit the tambourine on the 2 and not the 4! And then whipped out the sleigh bells (?!?!) to shine up a solo section. My first impulse would be to play the obvious, but those kinds of choices expanded the song that much more. Each member of the band has definitely schooled me by simply letting me observe their process.

Not much left to do – tomorrow, I’m off to Tim LaFlava’s to try out replacing an acoustic bass track with an electric track for a little more punch and definition. Friday, meeting up with Dave Swanson for final vocal tweaks.

Today, I noticed I had hit 12,900 hits on MySpace, and 19,000 plays... I don’t know who all these people are checking up on me, but I sure hope they’re going to want to buy my record! J

From the edge of spring, with love and optimism.

03.13.07 | The Scrappy Sessions, Vol. 1
If you’re making a record, and the studio floods irreparably the day before the first session, you lose your producer, your engineer cancels on you last minute, you get a respiratory virus the weekend before having to cut vocals, you run out of money…well, just sing, play, and make it anyway! This record seems to want to make itself, and at its own pace too. So, I breathe deep, and resign myself to the current.

That’s pretty much how it’s going on the production of “Sailor’s Daughter”, my first full-length CD. True story!! However, I must say that after hearing rough (ooo, rough!) mixes on not only what the band and I recorded live as a group at the end of February PLUS the horn overdubs just wickedly laid down by Kiku Collins, I am amazed at how fun and laid back most of the tracks are sounding. Not to say there aren’t lively, rockin’ moments…I will refrain from trying to explain the sound of the record until I can post some final mixes. But I will say there has been some crazy good juju going on. The music comes together now in ways I never predicted.

Besides Kiku, it behooves me to mention my incredifabulomazikillin’ band again, the magic they brought into the studio, and how to find out more about them. That crazy last week of February, they saved me from insanity. Boy do I have fun working with these guys.

Daniel Mintseris:
Piano, wurlitzer, melodica, toy xylophone.
www.myspace.com/mindlessinertia

Tim Lefebvre: acoustic and electric bass.
http://www.myspace.com/skipherbertson

Tony Mason: drumkit.
http://www.myspace.com/masonio

Daniel Sadownick- da Bronx Bomb! percussion.
http://www.danielsadownick.com/

Steven Elliot, electric guitars.
http://www.myspace.com/rockemsockemguitarbot

and last but most certainly not least…

Kiku Collins: trumpet and flugelhorn.
www.kikucollins.com

Ann Klein was/is my mentor and voice of reason during preproduction, during the flooding, and after the shock of hearing the rough mixes for the first time. She also constantly inspires me with her artistry as an amazingly accomplished yet humble guitarist/singer/songwriter.
www.myspace.com/annklein2

Also, Ron Allaire for the 911 emergency engineering at Skyline Studios, and Dave Swanson and Scott Jacoby for engineering the overdubs.

Tim Hatfield will be mixing the record the 2nd week of April, barring any further natural disasters. (knock wood!)

And, big surprise, I guess I’m a producer! Only by default. That is going to make it much easier to pick up chicks in bars. (Sorry that’s an inside joke among us chick singers.) Some things you never find out until you think you’re standing alone with everything you give a shit about - and that’s all - in your hands, and nowhere to go but forward. So on you go, scrappily.

And then you look around and notice…oh, I’m not really alone.

Sincere thanks to all of you for the emails, myspace notes, phone calls, and text messages checking on the project and offering encouragement these past several weeks! Those communiqués are appreciated deeply!!

More postcards from the horizon to follow.

Keepin’ the faith,
Celia

Stay tuned for the full-band versions!
